India in new ranking

Today :- Feb – Indian universities take up two spots in the top 20 places in Times Higher Education’s World’s Best Small Universities Ranking 2016, published this week for the first time. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati ranked 14th globally, followed by Savitribai Phule Pune University in 16th place. Small universities are defined by having fewer than 5,000 students and teach and research across more than four disciplines, Only 20 small universities in the world are world-class. According to Phil Baty, Times Higher Education rankings editor: “When it comes to universities, size matters. For some students big is best, but for others, a small university is the right option. Small universities can potentially offer students a more intimate environment, with more support and attention from lecturers, and –let’s be honest –more of a chance for students to spend time with the star professors who in bigger universities may simply be too busy. The smaller university can also offer a greater sense of collegiality and community, where students are less likely to get lost in the crowd. “The best small university in the rankings is the California Institute of Technology. Baty further added: “The fact that Caltech tops this ranking as well as the overall World University Ranking reveals that there is something very powerful about scale and focus, when it comes to university performance. It shows that careful analysis of millions of data points can provide important insights for students. It can help them make more informed choices about perhaps the most important decision of their lives- who to trust with their university education.” Only four of the 20 small universities cover all six broad subject areas (arts and humanities, medicine and clinical, engineering and technology, physical sciences, life sciences, and social sciences), These are Koc University, Savitribai Phule Pune University and University of Tulsa,
