Sumanth Reddy Pandugula won a global hackathon…

Today :- Jan – Sumanth Reddy Pandugula, an alum of an Indian institute, on how his learning at the university helped him become part of a team that eventually won a global hackathon.
A computer science student at SRM University, I was exposed to the basics of technology along with the current day trends and advancements in the field. The university also gave me the opportunity to participate in various hackathons and workshops that helped develop skills necessary to be a good team player. It also helped me become better at problem solving, and understand and create innovative software. The research day at SRM, where students present research ideas to faculty members, helped me participate and meet with students from various disciplines with research ideas. The project I worked on with the faculty at SRM planted the seed of research in me- this is where I learn to build useful applications for the public. As part of the student exchange programme at SRM, I got the opportunity to go to Carnegie Mellon University, where everything seemed futuristic –I saw students building robot teachers to self –driving cars and reading human minds. The application oriented teaching methodology at SRM aligns closely with that of the American education system. This helped me when I commenced my Master’s programme in the US. I continued to participate in hackathons and attend workshops during my Master’s programme. The experience and knowledge I gained at SRM and Carnegie Mellon helped me make a valuable contribution to my team which won the 2015 Facebook Global Hackathon. The finale of this hackathon, which took place at the Facebook headquarters in California, USA, witnessed participation from student team from various colleges from across 12 different countries.
