Today:- Sep – Many students of various premium institutes in India, specially around Ahmedabad have dropped their surnames setting up a trend of individualism, and leaving behind identities received with one’s birth. In India, ‘What’s in a surname’ matters a great deal.
In Gujarat, conversation between strangers or new acquaintances usually begin with asking ‘tame keva’ (to which community do you belong). But some progressive youths have decided to discard the social and caste markers of their surnames. Gaurang Jani, sociologist, said that it is a welcome trend shown by students and a good sign for society.
“In Gujarat, there is a tradition that if you ask someone’s name, he would first say his surname and then his name. This is also because of some bureaucratic procedures where we are compelled to write our surname first,” Jani said. The sociologist added, “Even in the classroom roasters, the surname is written first. Students of premium institutes are initiating this change which is a good sign and beginning a new tradition.”
Jani added that the state and the bureaucracy should also adopt such trends because the people who drop their surname witness obstacles mainly in government procedures.
